The Royal Palace of Caserta was commissioned in 1752 by Charles VII of Naples, who desired a palace that could rival Versailles and serve as a symbol of the Bourbon dynasty's power and prestige. Luigi Vanvitelli, a renowned architect, was entrusted with the design and construction of the palace. Construction began in 1752 and continued for several decades, even after Charles VII became King Charles III of Spain in 1759. Vanvitelli's son, Carlo Vanvitelli, took over the project after his father's death in 1773, and construction was finally completed in the early 19th century. Throughout its history, the palace served as a royal residence, a cultural center, and a military headquarters. In 1997, the Royal Palace of Caserta was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognizing its outstanding universal value.
