The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the culmination of decades of planning and construction, intended to create a world-class institution dedicated to Egyptian antiquities. The concept for a new, larger museum to replace the Egyptian Museum in Cairo was conceived in the early 21st century, with construction beginning in 2005. 

The museum's design, by Heneghan Peng Architects, was selected through an international competition.
