Quinta da Regaleira's history dates back to 1697 when it belonged to the Viscondessa da Regaleira. In 1892, the estate was acquired by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a wealthy Portuguese businessman with a passion for collecting art and symbols. Monteiro commissioned the Italian architect Luigi Manini to design the estate, which was constructed between 1904 and 1910. Manini incorporated a variety of architectural styles, including Roman, Gothic, Renaissance, and Manueline, to create a visually stunning and harmonious blend.

The estate was designed to reflect Monteiro's interests in Freemasonry, the Knights Templar, and other esoteric traditions. After Monteiro's death, the estate changed hands several times before being acquired by the Sintra Town Council in 1997. By train from Lisbon:
