A construção do convento iniciou-se em 1271. Foi construído para albergar 50 frades agostinhos eremitas e foi patrocinado pelo rei D. Afonso III. Segundo a tradição, em 1362, apareceu em Cascais uma imagem de Nossa Senhora da Graça, descoberta numa rede de pescador e trazida para o convento no dia seguinte. A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça está integrada no Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça, um dos maiores complexos conventuais de Lisboa. Apresenta um grande claustro de estilo serliano, uma sala do capítulo concluída em 1724, uma sacristia construída no início do século XVIII, um segundo claustro da mesma época e uma portaria e torre sineira, ambas concluídas por volta de 1738, da autoria de Manuel da Costa Negreiros.
