The Reina Sofia Museum is housed in a former General Hospital of Madrid, a large neoclassical building dating back to the 18th century. The hospital, designed by architect José de Hermosilla, was in operation until 1965. In 1986, the building was designated as the home for the new National Museum of 20th-Century Art.
