The Aquarium of the Pacific first opened its doors on June 20, 1998, quickly establishing itself as a leading institution for marine science and education. Conceived as a focal point for revitalizing downtown Long Beach and fostering a deeper appreciation for the Pacific Ocean, its creation was a monumental effort. From its inception, the Aquarium has been dedicated to showcasing the full breadth of the Pacific, divided into three main geographic regions: Southern California/Baja, the Northern Pacific, and the Tropical Pacific. Over the years, it has continuously expanded its offerings and conservation efforts, introducing new exhibits like the June Keyes Penguin Habitat, the Shark Lagoon, and the Pacific Visions wing, which provides immersive experiences exploring urgent environmental issues. The Aquarium has become a respected voice in marine conservation, actively participating in breeding programs for endangered species, advocating for sustainable practices, and educating millions of visitors annually about the importance of ocean health.
