历史

Palazzo Pitti was originally commissioned by the Florentine banker Luca Pitti and designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1458. However, construction was interrupted by Pitti’s death in 1472, and the building was left unfinished. In 1549, the palace was purchased by Eleonora di Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, who transformed it into the principal residence of the Medici family. The Medici family expanded the palace, adding new wings, courtyards, and the Boboli Gardens.

The palace became a symbol of Medici power and wealth, hosting lavish banquets, festivals, and theatrical performances. In the 18th century, the palace passed to the House of Lorraine and later to the House of Savoy, who continued to use it as a royal residence. In 1919, Palazzo Pitti was turned into a state museum, opening its doors to the public and showcasing its vast collections of art and historical artifacts. Today, it stands as one of Florence's most important cultural landmarks, attracting visitors from around the world.
