历史

The Reina Sofia Museum is housed in a former General Hospital of Madrid, a large neoclassical building dating back to the 18th century. The hospital, designed by architect José de Hermosilla, was in operation until 1965. In 1986, the building was designated as the home for the new National Museum of 20th-Century Art. Major renovations and expansions were carried out in the late 1980s and early 1990s to transform the former hospital into a modern museum space. The museum officially opened to the public on September 10, 1992. In 2005, an expansion designed by French architect Jean Nouvel added new exhibition spaces, a library, and an auditorium, enhancing the museum's capacity to showcase and promote modern and contemporary art. The Reina Sofia has since become one of Spain's most important cultural institutions.
