Histoire

The construction of Peleș Castle began in 1873 under the patronage of King Carol I, Romania's first monarch. He envisioned a royal summer residence that would reflect the country's growing prosperity and his personal taste for German Neo-Renaissance architecture. The king meticulously oversaw every detail of the construction, which involved numerous architects, builders, and artisans from across Europe. The castle was officially inaugurated in 1883, though additions and refinements continued until 1914. It was the first fully electrified castle in Europe and boasted many other modern amenities. Peleș served as the primary summer residence for the Romanian royal family until 1947, when the monarchy was abolished by the communist regime. During the communist era, the castle was briefly opened to the public as a museum but later became a private retreat for state officials. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, Peleș Castle was reopened as a museum, becoming one of Romania's most significant historical and architectural landmarks.

Heures d'ouverture

Peleș Castle's opening hours vary significantly by season. During the main tourist season, typically from May to October, it generally opens Wednesday to Sunday, with specific hours often from 9:15 AM or 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM. During the low season, from November to April, hours may be reduced, and the castle might be closed for a longer period for conservation work, particularly in November. The castle is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays year-round. It is advisable to plan your visit on weekdays, Wednesday through Friday, for a potentially less crowded experience. Holidays may also affect operating hours.

Meilleur moment pour visiter

The ideal time to visit Peleș Castle is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the surrounding scenery is particularly beautiful with blooming flowers or vibrant fall foliage. The crowds are also generally smaller compared to the peak summer months. Visiting early in the morning on a weekday, shortly after opening, is recommended to avoid the largest groups of tourists and enjoy a more serene experience within the castle. Winter visits offer a unique charm with snowy landscapes, though access might be affected by weather conditions.

Que voir à l'intérieur

Inside Peleș Castle, visitors are greeted by an unparalleled display of royal luxury and artistic mastery. Each of the over 160 rooms presents a unique theme and decorative style. Highlights include the Grand Armory, featuring an impressive collection of over 4,000 European and Oriental weapons from the 15th to 19th centuries, and the Florentine Room, characterized by its Italian Renaissance influences. The Moorish Salon showcases exotic Eastern design elements, while the Imperial Suite reflects Austro-Hungarian opulence. Visitors will also marvel at the intricate stained-glass windows, hand-painted ceilings, and an extensive collection of valuable paintings, sculptures, and tapestries that adorn the castle's many chambers, all contributing to an unforgettable journey through royal history.
