Mirabell Palace, whose name comes from Italian words meaning "admirable" and "beautiful", was initially named Altenau Palace. After Wolf Dietrich's death, his successor renamed it Mirabell. The palace has since passed through many hands and purposes, including serving as a residence for Salzburg's ruling prince-archbishops. A devastating fire in 1818 significantly damaged the palace, necessitating extensive renovations in a more simplified style. Despite these changes, the palace retains much of its original Baroque character, particularly in the Grand Staircase and Marble Hall. The Mirabell Gardens are perhaps even more famous than the palace itself. Designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach in 1690, they were later redesigned in their present form around 1730. The gardens are laid out in a geometric pattern, featuring fountains, sculptures, flower beds, and manicured lawns. The gardens offer breathtaking views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, making them a favorite spot for photographers and tourists alike.
